NEW: Mobile planetarium shows especially for seniors
The Peterborough Planetarium will now be offering mobile planetarium shows that come to seniors at nursing/long-term-care homes, retirement residences, seniors activity centres, and adult lifestyle communities.
“We’ve had overwhelming gratitude for the science-centre-level experience we offer seniors by bringing full-dome digital star shows right to their homes,” says McMahon.
“Residences see our mobile planetarium as a dynamic new option for senior activities and we wanted to support that by building shows just for them,” he says. “To our knowledge, we’re the only planetarium in Canada bringing shows directly to seniors.”
The ‘senior-optimized’ shows will have a different pace, brighter, higher-contrast projection on-request, and will feature fewer scenes in low-light.
Patrons will also have the option of attending shows in/with assistive devices such as walkers, wheel chairs, and even beds or other large devices, if needed. (Patrons who do not require these devices or those who wish to leave such devices outside the planetarium will have the option to sit in any chairs the residence may wish to have brought in to the dome.)
A planetarium staff member who has completed Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) training will be available to assist residence staff with getting patrons with mobility and/or other challenges settled in the dome before shows begin.
The portable dome is Ontario’s newest space attraction and educational facility, serving Peterborough, Northumberland, Durham, the GTA, and counties-beyond
